temporary pasture board at SFF.
At the time of adoption, all training & gentling is the responsibility of
the adopter. If you need any help or suggestions, please feel free to ask.
It is a good idea to keep your animal away from other horses for 3 weeks to
be sure you don’t pass any sickness between horses.
YOUR ANIMALS MAY BE INSPECTED AT ANY TIME UNTIL THE TITLE IS
ISSUED
For
the first year after adopting, you do not own the horse and must
notify BLM immediately if your animal dies, escapes, or is moved to another
location. One year after adopting, you will receive a Title Application in the
mail. You must have your veterinarian or other qualified person inspect your
animal and sign the application, then return it to your servicing office.
Approximately 4-6 weeks later you will receive a Title Certificate in the mail.
The Title Certificate should remain with the animal if it is sold or given away.
If you are no
longer able to care for the animal and have not received title to it, you may
return it to the BLM, but you will not receive a refund of your adoption fee.

Preparing to take your Mustang home
** Facilities must meet these requirements and be constructed
before you can transport your animal home! **
CORRAL & SHELTER Requirements:
An outside corral with a minimum of 400 square feet (20x20) per animal.
Corral should not be too large (more than 50x50), as animals are easier to
gentle in smaller corrals.
All fences and gates must be at least 6 feet high for wild horses
over the age of 18 months. Five-foot high fences are allowed for gentled
horses, yearlings, and burros. Gates must be properly secured (Some horses
can open insufficiently secured gates).
Fencing material should be 2x6 inch wooden planks spaced no more than one
foot apart, rounded pipes, poles, or similar materials that do not pose a
hazard to the animal. Small mesh, heavy gauge, woven wire fencing with a 2x6
inch board along the top, center and bottom is acceptable. No barb wire, no
electric wire, no T-posts. Once gentled, the animals may be maintained in
pastures or in box stalls with daily turnout.
Shelters can be a three-sided shed attached to the corral, or box stall
in barn attached to corral, allowing animal to move freely between the
corral and shelter. Shelter or stall space should be at least 12 X 12 feet
per animal.
You must be able to back your trailer directly to your corral to unload
the horse (They cannot be led to the corral!).
TRANSPORTATION
Adopters must provide their own vehicles or make private arrangements.
Standard covered stock trailers and horse trailers large enough for 4 or more
horses are generally acceptable, contingent on final approval prior to loading.
NO 1-HORSE TRAILERS. Two horse trailers are not allowed unless they are a
stock-type, with no internal dividers. Animals will ride loose and must have
enough space to turn around.
Feed bunks in trailer must be blocked off or covered to prevent the horse
from trying to jump into them.
No pick ups with stock racks.
Lengthwise and slant-load dividers must be removed.
NO DROP RAMP TAIL GATES ARE ALLOWED
You are responsible if the horse should get loose on your property or during
transportation. If a horse should need to be recaptured, you must pay BLM fees.
Prerequisites:
Adoption fee must be paid in full and paperwork must be completed at least 24
hrs prior to hauling.
Your facility, corral and transportation must be approved by the BLM
prior to moving your horse.
If you would like the horse haltered, you must provide the halter at least 24
hours in advance of hauling the horse home.
YOUR FACILITIES AND ANIMALS MAY BE INSPECTED AT ANY TIME UNTIL
THE TITLE IS ISSUED
