Important information: One thing
that you will find out very quickly is that these horses may be truly afraid of
you! Until you have gained their confidence, they may continue to move away from
you. By allowing them time to settle in and get acquainted slowly, you can gain
their trust. Once you have gained their trust, you will have one of the most
rewarding experiences of your life. There may be times when you experience
frustrations, or even doubt, about what you are doing. If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact the Milwaukee staff at 1-800-293-1781, or
Jane Loughmiller at 812-239-1211. Before
you turn your horse out into the pasture, be sure you can catch and halter him
easily. He must also be used to your type of fencing. It is recommended that you
turn them out into gradually larger areas if possible. For
the first year after adopting, you do not own the horse and must
notify BLM immediately if your animal dies, escapes, or is moved to another
location. One year after adopting, you will receive a Title Application in the
mail. You must have your veterinarian or other qualified person inspect your
animal and sign the application, then return it to your servicing office.
Approximately 4-6 weeks later you will receive a Title Certificate in the mail.
The Title Certificate should remain with the animal if it is sold or given away. Thank you for participating in this great program!
